JFK airport

Poor usability

What’s wrong with that picture? (Besides it being a pretty bad one - I took it with my phone’s camera in low light, and it was so bad in colour that I had to make it black and white to look halfway decent)

That’s the faceplate on an elevator I got into at the JFK airport in New York. It took me a good 10 or 15 seconds to figure out exactly which button to push. Why do the numbers on the left not match the numbers on the right?? Why are there even two sets of numbers in the first place?????

Ok, so I’ve been reading Don Norman’s “Design of Everyday Things” on the plane. I figured I might as well try too keep up with my peers who’ll be taking interaction design courses at SCAD while I’m in Augusta with Husqvarna. It really makes you think about the things you use all the time. I haven’t gotten far because I keep falling asleep when I try to read the book. That doesn’t reflect the content though! Only that I’m still recovering from last week.

The airport here is alright. I don’t really like how it’s set up. First thing I noticed though is that the airport in Istanbul is almost an exact copy of the terminal I am in. I wonder if that’s an airport standard or if the airport in Istanbul was purposely designed to mimic this one.

Now I’m waiting for my flight to Amman. Went through “special screening” again. At first I was annoyed, but now that I think about it, I didn’t have to wait in line, so I actually got through faster than I would have otherwise. Still not cool that they did that though. I think my luggage was marked to be screened, and if that’s the case I really hope they don’t mess up the perfectly packed contents. I don’t want my stuff getting damaged.

I’ll be on the lookout for poor usability in Lebanon. I’m sure I’ll find tons of cases there.

Bad signal

Here’s me again. This time I’m trying to figure out why I’m getting bad signal on my phone. It’s making the internet particularly slow!

(What is it with Arab men and moustaches? I’d say 8 out of 10 men in this waiting area have thick black moustaches. Why?)

I have always wondered why the mustache is still around. You can read all about that on my blog. Of course, I’ve revised my feelings a little. I say, if you have a beard and a mustache, it’s okay, but if you just have a mustache….why? And I think maybe there is a second floor, it is just not accessible by the general public perhaps, so you’re going to level 2 but it’s on floor 3? Maybe, that’s all I can think of. As to why they would then number them to confuse a person, is beyond me. I hope you get some wonderful, needed, well deserved rest on your crazy long flight. Love ya kitten. ;)
